A very rare aureus of Diocletian struck to commemorate his vicennalia

Diocletian, 284-305. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 5.13 g, 12 h), Aquileia, 303. DIOCLETIA-NVS AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Diocletian to right. Rev. XX / DIOCL/ETIAN/I AVG / SMAQ within laurel wreath. Calicó 4591 (same dies). Depeyrot 4/2. Paolucci & Zub 4. RIC 12. Very rare. An attractive piece with a bold and unusually naturalistic portrait. Minor traces of mounting, otherwise, good extremely fine.

This lovely aureus was struck in commemoration of Diocletian's and Maximianus' vicennalia, which they celebrated on 20 November 303.
